Edition: Base game
The score, explained
The interest and responsiveness of the core decisions and actions.
How progression, exploration and goals fit together.
The coherence of the visual, musical and narrative presentation.
How clearly the game explains its rules and offers useful ways to engage.
The depth of optional goals, alternative approaches and reasons to return.
A world can also be a tool
COCOON turns its central idea into something immediately concrete: a world exists inside an orb, and that orb can be carried through another world. The puzzle is then not only where to go, but which space should contain the object you need. The game develops this through combining and rearranging orbs, each of which can gain an ability useful elsewhere. Our core-play score rewards the strength of that relationship. A small set of objects can create questions at several scales without requiring a crowded inventory. The likely difficulty is conceptual rather than a matter of collecting enough equipment. Players need to hold relationships between spaces in mind, and someone who dislikes that kind of reasoning may find the elegant premise demanding.
Rules that travel between environments
The different worlds have their own environments and machinery, but the orb system prevents them from being entirely separate puzzle rooms. An ability gained in one context can matter in another, giving progress the satisfying shape of learning how familiar objects interact. The game also includes guardian encounters that ask for new mechanics, adding changes of emphasis within the adventure. We score the structure highly because it keeps returning to the central idea with additional consequences. It is a focused authored journey, however, rather than an open-ended building sandbox. Readers who want to invent their own structures indefinitely should not expect the same kind of freedom here; the main attraction is understanding and solving the situations the designers have arranged.
Alien spaces with a practical visual role
COCOON's environments combine organic caverns, industrial structures and unusual machinery. That visual range gives the nested worlds individual identities, helping the player think of them as places as well as portable objects. The artwork supports a clear relationship between the small protagonist, the carried orb and the larger structures around them. Our presentation assessment values that functional coherence rather than treating strangeness as an achievement on its own. A puzzle game needs its images to invite questions while still giving the player useful things to distinguish. Distinct silhouettes help a carried orb remain recognisable against the machinery and organic forms of an unfamiliar landscape. An orb can be an object carried across one landscape and an entire world entered from another.
Choose it for the connection between puzzles
COCOON fits a player who wants to recognise a rule and then discover a new consequence of it. Its strongest appeal is the way carrying, entering and combining worlds turn into related problems rather than a series of unrelated minigames. Our reasons-to-return score is deliberately lower than its puzzle and presentation scores because learning a solution changes the character of an authored puzzle sequence. Replaying can still be enjoyable without reproducing the first discovery. Chants of Sennaar is a useful alternative if the same desire for connected understanding is more appealing through languages and social spaces. Choose COCOON when the idea of a world becoming a tool is the question you most want the adventure to explore. In our quiet problems selection, COCOON earns its place because carrying worlds creates an unusually clear central idea.
